Alexander Chernushin
Born in Borisov, Belarus, Alexander Chernushin’s artistic sensibility was nurtured from an early age, shaped by the creative passions of his father and grandfather. His father, an enthusiast of graphic art, and his grandfather, a war veteran and colonel with a deep love for classical painting, both left an indelible mark on the young artist. As a child, Chernushin would often sit for portraits his grandfather painted, an experience that steeped his early years in the evocative scents of oil paint and turpentine, forever linking his memories to the world of art.
Though he initially pursued a technical education, it became clear that Chernushin's true calling lay beyond the conventional path. He ventured into web design, teaching himself the fundamentals and completing courses at the prestigious British Higher School of Design. His natural talent led him to a successful career as a UX/UI designer, collaborating with renowned brands and private entities.
However, as time passed, the structured nature of design work began to constrain his creative freedom. Yearning for a more profound form of self-expression, Chernushin returned to the physicality of brushes and paints. Immersing himself in the contemporary art scene, he discovered the works of Gerhard Richter. Captivated by Richter’s mastery of color and expressive power, Chernushin was inspired to forge his own path in abstract expressionism, a style through which his paintings radiate an inner energy that captivates the viewer.
Chernushin’s process is fully immersive — each movement, each brushstroke is charged with intention. Using long aluminum rails to apply oil paints, he imbues every gesture with meaning, creating a dialogue between color and consciousness. His works become living entities, where the medium itself asserts its presence, transforming into singular objects of contemplation.
For Alexander Chernushin, painting is a meditative path to discovering authenticity. His canvases invite the viewer into this journey, offering a moment to pause, to step outside the boundaries of societal expectations, rules, and clichés, and to glimpse a reflection of their truest self in the shifting layers of his art.
Artist Statement
My work delves into the interplay between the inner self and external perception. Through abstract compositions, I seek to evoke a meditative state and a profound sense of connection within the viewer. Using an intuitive approach, I avoid assigning specific meanings to my pieces, allowing color and texture to become reflections of my emotions and experiences. For me, the creative process itself is paramount—each detail becomes an invitation to introspection.
My art aims to forge a deep bond with the viewer. By focusing on the pure experience of interacting with the material, without the need for an external narrative, I create a space where each person can find a reflection of their own emotions and feelings. My approach is centered on crafting a meditative environment for the audience, where the works serve as mirrors of their internal emotional landscapes, inviting them to discover their own authenticity.
